CEO, Anthropic
Within 6–12 months, AI will do most or all of what software engineers do, end to end
01 / THE ORIGINAL CLAIM
“I have engineers within Anthropic who say, I don't write any code anymore. I just let the model write the code. I edit it. I do the things around it. I think, I don't know, we might be six to 12 months away from when the model is doing most, maybe all of what SWEs do end to end. And then it's a question of how fast does that loop close?”

02 / THE REALITY CHECK
Likely falseFour months left, and the best AI meets the human standard on about 21% of real paid projects. US software developers number 1.7 million, and postings are rising.

Why it's heading for a miss
With four months left, nothing points to AI doing most or all of software engineers' work end to end by January 2027. Coding agents have improved fast: METR estimated an early Claude Mythos Preview's 50% time horizon at 16 hours or more on its software tasks. But that measures the task length a model finishes half the time, not a whole job. On the Remote Labor Index of real paid projects, the best system meets the human standard on about 21% of them. BLS counted 1.72 million US software developers in 2025 and projects 10% growth to 2035. Indeed's software-development postings index is up from its May 2025 low of 61.1 to 74.4.
