Dario Amodei
CEO, Anthropic
AI will write 90% of code in 3–6 months and essentially all code within 12 months
01 / THE ORIGINAL CLAIM
“we are not far from the world—I think we'll be there in three to six months—where AI is writing 90 percent of the code. And then in twelve months, we may be in a world where AI is writing essentially all of the code.”
Dario Amodei ·
Deadline given: 90% in three to six months; essentially all within twelve months
02 / THE REALITY CHECK
FAKEHis 12-month deadline passed in March 2026. Developers across the industry said AI generated or assisted 42% of their code, and not even Anthropic reached 'essentially all'.
Deadline passed 6 months ago

Mar 10, 2025: At CFR, Amodei made the prediction while adding that the programmer still needs to specify the overall design and decide whether code is secure.

Oct 2025: At Dreamforce, Amodei said the prediction was "absolutely true" within Anthropic and some customers, but conceded it was "Not uniformly" so across teams.

Oct 22, 2025: Redwood Research's Ryan Greenblatt estimated the Anthropic-wide share of merged code written by AI was "more like 50%", with 90% reached only on a minority of teams.

Jan 8, 2026: Sonar's survey of more than 1,100 professional developers found that 42% of the code they commit is AI-generated or assisted, with 65% expected by 2027.

Apr 22, 2026: Sundar Pichai said 75% of all new code at Google is AI-generated and approved by engineers, up from 50% the previous fall.

May 2026: Anthropic reported that more than 80% of code merged into its codebase was authored by Claude. This is a stricter measure than leadership's public '90% or more' figure, which also counted scripts and experimental code.

Why it didn't happen
Amodei said 'the code', not Anthropic's code. By his March 2026 deadline, developers in Sonar's January 2026 survey said AI generated or assisted 42% of the code they commit. The high numbers are AI companies reporting on their own codebases. Anthropic said more than 80% of its merged code was written by Claude in May 2026, after the deadline, and an outside estimate put the figure nearer 50% in October 2025. Google said 75% of its new code was AI-generated 'and approved by engineers'. Humans still specify, review and approve the work, which is the caveat Amodei gave himself.
