Most white-collar computer tasks will be fully automated by AI within 12–18 months
01 / THE ORIGINAL CLAIM
“I think that we're going to have a human-level performance on most, if not all, professional tasks. So, white-collar work, where you're sitting down at a computer — either being, you know, a lawyer, or an accountant, or a project manager, or a marketing person — most of those tasks will be fully automated by an AI within the next 12 to 18 months.”

Deadline given: within the next 12 to 18 months
02 / THE REALITY CHECK
Likely falseEleven months left. The best AI meets the human standard on about a fifth of real paid projects, and Suleyman has already narrowed the claim to 'sub-tasks'.

July 28, 2026: Ars Technica reported a Google Research study of 15 million real Gemini interactions. It found end-to-end task automation 'limited in scope': only 21% of work tasks saw meaningful Gemini use, and in 29% of occupations no task did.

Why it's heading for a miss
With eleven months left, 'fully automated' is far off, and the claimant has already narrowed his own claim. Four months after the interview, Suleyman said on The Verge's Decoder podcast that he meant sub-tasks such as emails and slide decks, which 'does not necessarily mean that the role goes away at all.' Current evidence is far from 'fully automated'. On the Remote Labor Index of real paid projects, the top AI system meets the human standard on 20.83% of them. BLS counted 863,700 lawyers in 2025 and projects 5% growth, and US unemployment was 4.1% in August 2026.
