Why it didn't happen
In the essay, this sentence is the first step toward AI doing lawyers' and doctors' work and pushing the price of that labor 'toward zero'. By the deadline, OpenAI's own usage policy (effective October 29, 2025) prohibited 'provision of tailored advice that requires a license, such as legal or medical advice, without appropriate involvement by a licensed professional'. ChatGPT Health launched in January 2026 saying it is 'not intended for use in the diagnosis or treatment of any health condition', and courts have logged 2,041 decisions involving AI-hallucinated legal material. OpenAI's first model configured for legal work, Astra for Law, launched on September 17, 2026, six months after the deadline and only for selected firms through a trusted-access program. BLS still counts about 864,000 lawyers and 863,000 physicians and projects both professions to grow.
