Within ten years, AI could beat experts in most fields and match a top corporation's output
01 / THE ORIGINAL CLAIM
“Given the picture as we see it now, it’s conceivable that within the next ten years, AI systems will exceed expert skill level in most domains, and carry out as much productive activity as one of today’s largest corporations.”
Sam Altman ·
Deadline given: within the next ten years
02 / THE REALITY CHECK
PendingThree years in, models match professionals on many benchmark tasks, but the best AI still delivers acceptable work on only about one in five real freelance projects.

Where things stand
Nearly seven years remain, and the claim was hedged as merely 'conceivable'. The expert-skill half is moving: OpenAI's GPT-5.4 matched or beat industry professionals in 83% of GDPval comparisons across 44 occupations, and an internal OpenAI model produced machine-checked proofs of long-open math problems. The corporate-output half is far off. The top system on the Remote Labor Index delivers client-acceptable work on 20.83% of real projects, and only 17–20% of US businesses report using AI at all. ARC Prize, which measured OpenAI's newest model, says it is 'not claiming that it is AGI'.
