He had given a 10–25% range for disaster on the Logan Bartlett Show in October 2023, so the figure has stayed roughly the same for two years.

Expert estimates are far apart: superforecasters in the XPT tournament gave 0.38% for AI-caused extinction by 2100, and the median AI researcher in AI Impacts' 2024 survey gave 10% for extinction or severe disempowerment.

No civilization-scale harm has happened. After the July 2026 OpenAI–Hugging Face agent incident, Amodei wrote that 'no one was hurt and the economic damage was minimal'. He also warned that a more capable swarm could take over 'the entire internet' within 6–12 months.

On 12 September 2026 Amodei called on the industry to slow capability gains ('pace the frontier'). Altman and Musk backed the idea, while Anthropic prepared for an IPO.

Why it was overhyped
One-in-four odds of things going 'really, really badly' is an outlier. Superforecasters in the XPT tournament put AI-caused extinction by 2100 at 0.38%, and the median researcher in AI Impacts' 2024 survey said 10%. Amodei gave no time frame and no definition of 'badly', so the figure can never be checked, but it still made headlines. Four months later he wrote that 'our odds are good', and Anthropic kept shipping frontier models throughout.
