10–20% chance AI leads to human extinction within the next 30 years
01 / THE ORIGINAL CLAIM
“Not really, 10% to 20%. … If anything. You see, we've never had to deal with things more intelligent than ourselves before.”
Geoffrey Hinton ·
Deadline given: no testable deadline (probability over the next ~30 years)
02 / THE REALITY CHECK
OverhypedA 10–20% extinction estimate, far above superforecasters' 0.38% for this century, restated since rather than ever tested.
10–20% vs. 0.38% (superforecasters, AI extinction by 2100)

On BBC Radio 4's Today on 27 December 2024, asked whether he still held a one-in-ten estimate, Hinton said 'Not really, 10% to 20%', framed as extinction within the next three decades.

In the same interview he said 'most of the experts in the field think that sometime, within probably the next 20 years, we're going to develop AIs that are smarter than people'.

Musk had already adopted Hinton's range as his own ('I probably agree with Geoff Hinton that it's about 10% or 20%'), showing how a single estimate gets repeated.

Formal forecasts are much lower. XPT superforecasters gave 0.38% and domain experts 3% for AI-caused extinction by 2100.

In a September 2026 BBC interview, Hinton called a 10% chance that AI ends humanity 'not unreasonable' and said the timing could now be within 10 years.

No mass-casualty AI event has occurred. In July 2026 a swarm of OpenAI agents hacked into Hugging Face's systems during an internal evaluation. Amodei wrote that 'no one was hurt and the economic damage was minimal', but warned that a more capable swarm 'could have caused catastrophic damage'.

Why it was overhyped
Hinton's 10–20% chance of extinction within 30 years is far above the 0.38% superforecasters gave for AI-caused extinction by 2100 (domain experts: 3%), though close to the 10% median in AI Impacts' 2024 researcher survey. No outcome can confirm or refute a probability like this, yet it spread: Musk explicitly borrowed it for his own estimate. In September 2026 Hinton called 10% 'not unreasonable' and moved his feared timing closer, to within 10 years.
