Google DeepMind will reach AGI in the next five to ten years
01 / THE ORIGINAL CLAIM
“Scott Pelley: On track for AGI in-- Demis Hassabis: In the next five to ten years, I think. Scott Pelley: And in 2030 you will have what? Demis Hassabis: Well, we'll have a system that-- really understands everything around you in very-- nuanced and deep ways-- and are kind of embedded in your everyday life.”

02 / THE REALITY CHECK
PendingThe window runs to April 2035. Hassabis has since pulled his own forecast in to 2029–30, but the best AI agent still completes only about a fifth of real freelance projects to a client's standard.

Sept 3, 2026: OpenAI released GPT-6 Astra, and its president Greg Brockman said it would be reasonable to see it as a version of AGI: 'Welcome to the AGI era!' No agreed test of AGI backs the claim.

Sept 2026: On Scale AI's Remote Labor Index of real paid freelance projects, GPT-6 Astra leads with a 20.83% automation rate. It fails to deliver client-ready work on roughly four in five projects.

Where things stand
The claim can't be scored until April 2035. Hassabis defines AGI as a system able to exhibit 'all the complicated capabilities that humans can', and no lab has shown one yet. GPT-6 Astra, the top system on Scale AI's Remote Labor Index in September 2026, produced client-acceptable work on 20.83% of real paid projects. OpenAI's Greg Brockman still greeted Astra with 'Welcome to the AGI era!', and in May 2026 Hassabis moved his own forecast forward to 2029 or 2030.
