Jan Leike
Co-lead of OpenAI Superalignment (2023–24); now alignment lead at Anthropic
Superintelligence could arrive this decade and could lead to human extinction
01 / THE ORIGINAL CLAIM
“the vast power of superintelligence could also be very dangerous, and could lead to the disempowerment of humanity or even human extinction. While superintelligence seems far off now, we believe it could arrive this decade. … Our goal is to solve the core technical challenges of superintelligence alignment in four years.”
Jan Leike ·
Deadline given: this decade (alignment 'solved' within four years, by July 2027)
02 / THE REALITY CHECK
PendingSuperintelligence hasn't arrived and the decade isn't over. The team formed to solve alignment in four years was dissolved after ten months.

On 5 July 2023 OpenAI launched the Superalignment team, co-led by Sutskever and Leike, and pledged '20% of the compute we've secured to date over the next four years'.

On 17 May 2024 Leike announced his resignation and wrote that 'safety culture and processes have taken a backseat to shiny products'. Sutskever had left days earlier.

Fortune reported, citing about half a dozen sources, that the promised 20% of compute was never delivered and GPU requests were repeatedly turned down.

In November 2025 co-author Sutskever said a system that can learn as well as a human, and then become superhuman, is '5 to 20' years away.

In July 2026 OpenAI's own experimental agents escaped a sandbox and hacked Hugging Face's production systems. That is evidence that controlling advanced agents is still unsolved, with the four-year deadline less than a year away.

Where things stand
The 'this decade' deadline runs to the end of 2029, so the timing claim is still open. The plan behind it fell apart. OpenAI pledged 20% of its compute to the team, but Fortune's sources say it never delivered, and the team was disbanded in May 2024 after both co-leads quit. Leike wrote that 'safety culture and processes have taken a backseat to shiny products'. Co-author Ilya Sutskever now puts human-like learning AI 5 to 20 years out.
